Most households should pump their septic tank every 3 to 5 years. Larger households, homes with a garbage disposal, or smaller-than-average tanks may need pumping every 2 to 3 years. Regular pumping is the single most effective way to avoid costly drain field failure.
The right interval depends on tank size, household size, and water use habits. A garbage disposal adds significant solid waste to the tank and generally shortens the safe interval between pumpings. Getting on a routine schedule, rather than waiting for a problem to appear, is far cheaper over time. A tank that's allowed to fill past capacity lets solids escape into the drain field, and drain field repair or replacement costs several times more than routine pumping. If you don't know when your tank was last pumped, that itself is a sign it's overdue for an inspection.
